Martha LaVerne Gaskin was born to the union of Robert and Marie Allen on Friday, August 13, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas. Her mother, father and three brothers, Robert Jr., William and Fredrick preceded her in death.
Martha married Perry Gaskin and to this union two children were born, Kieron Gaskin and WaWinta Burgess.
At an early age Martha accepted Christ and was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor R. C. Higgs. Martha was active in several ministries. She served as a trustee, mission support support for the youth, choir director and a member of sick and shut-in ministry.
Martha loved to sing and give God all she had. She was a lead singer of the Christ Ebons Contemporary Singers. She also loved working with the elderly.
Martha attended school in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Sumner High School. She also took classes in home inspection. She worked at General Motors and retired in 2005 after 30 years of service. In 2013, she opened the Kansas City Royals’ game with the national anthem. Also in 2014, she again sang the national anthem for the unveiling of the bust of General Colin Powell in Fort Leavenworth.
She leaves to cherish her memory son Kieron Gaskin (Edwina) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and daughter WaWinta L. Burgess (Gaidi) of Pearland, TX. Goddaughter DeAnna R. Lester (Michael) of Barrington, IL and Godson Ray Lee Sawyer of Kansas City, MO. Two sisters, Patricia Allen-Hogan and Brenda Darlin of Kansas City, KS , 9 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
