At an early age, Carroll was baptized at the Eighth Street Baptist Church  by Rev. I.H. Henderson, Sr.  While a member there, she participated in many activities.  Later, she united with Trinity AME Church, and was a member of the choir until her health began to fail.

Carroll was previously married; however the marriage was later dissolved.

Carroll taught school in Vallejo, California, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.  She also taught in the Adult Basic Education Program in the Kansas City,  Missouri, and Center School District.  She had to give up the later position to be the care giver for her maternal grandmother.
