Laurance Caruthers Obituary

Laurance was born August 1st, 1941, and was the eldest son of Marion Caruthers Jr. and Addie Mae Jackson Caruthers. He departed this life on February 29th, 2024, at the age of 82. He had a younger brother, William (Bill) and a younger sister, Barbara Jewell. He married his beloved wife, Gloria Jean McGaskey, July 25th, 1965. To their union a daughter, Carmen Michelle and a son, Laurance Michael was born.

He attended Kansas City, Kansas public schools, including Grant and Hawthorne elementary and Northwest Jr. High. He was a proud member of the Sumner High School Class of 1961.

Laurance gave his life to Christ at an early age and was a longtime faithful member of St. Peter’s CME Church, in Kansas City, Kansas where he served on Steward Board #3.

Laurance worked in law enforcement after high school as a Kansas City Kansas Reserve Police Officer and as a guard with the US Marshall Department. In 1967 he began working for the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and after nearly 30 years, he retired in 1996. He began working for Kansas City Kansas Public Schools in 1997 where he was a bus driver until his health issues lead him to retire.

He spent his spare time with his favorite people, Carmen “Ladybug” and Brittany “Boo.” They loved trying new restaurants and would frequently go out with friends to try new cuisines. Laurance also loved his pets, Baby & Luna.

Laurance was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Jean; his son, Michael “T’Cher,”; his parents, Marion and Addie Mae; his brother, William; and his sister, Barbara Jewell.

He is survived by his precious daughter, Carmen; his granddaughter, Brittany; his niece, Faye; and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones. While his presence will be missed here on earth, let us rejoice that he is held in the arms of the Lord!
